Can oak bark decoction be taken internally?

LEKRASET Tammekoor is a plant material used primarily externally: for rinses, compresses and local baths. It is for these purposes that the product is described on the product page; the manufacturer's label also gives an internal-use regimen for adults: ½ glass (100 ml) of infusion once a day with meals, as a 1-month course, after consulting a doctor.

As for internal use, oak bark does appear in some folk recipes to be taken internally, but that is a separate matter. With regular internal use, the high tannin content may irritate the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract and also affect the absorption of certain substances and medicines.

For this reason, it is sensible to consult a specialist before any internal use, especially if you have chronic gastrointestinal conditions, take medicines, or if it is intended for children. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are listed on the label as contraindications.

For external use (rinses, compresses) the product is suitable in line with its purpose; the risks here are much lower, although even in this case it is worth starting with a low concentration and checking how sensitive skin or mucous membranes react.
