Hawthorn tincture is an alcohol-based plant extract made from hawthorn berries. Like any product with a pronounced phytochemical composition, it may interact with drugs that affect the cardiovascular or nervous system.
If you take medicines (antiarrhythmic, blood-pressure-lowering, sedative or any other preparations prescribed by a doctor), be sure to consult a specialist before starting the tincture. This is not a formal caveat: plant extracts can strengthen or weaken the action of a number of drugs, and only a doctor who knows your treatment plan can assess compatibility.
A separate point is the alcohol base of the tincture. Ethanol itself is incompatible with a number of medicines, and is also undesirable in some chronic conditions. If alcohol is contraindicated for you in any amount, this form of the product will not suit you. Caution is advised for children aged 12 to 18, and in liver disorders, brain diseases, traumatic brain injuries and alcoholism.
Hawthorn tincture is a food supplement, not a medicine, and is not intended for treating or preventing any disease. It is chosen as an addition to a usual daily routine, but only in situations where there is no drug therapy that requires coordination.
