Can this probiotic be taken during or right after a course of antibiotics?

Taking probiotics alongside antibiotics or after a course of them is a common practice, but the product label does not describe this scenario. There is, however, an important practical point: antibiotics and probiotics should not be taken at the same time, because an antibacterial medicine can reduce the viability of the probiotic cultures. The generally accepted recommendation is to leave an interval of at least 2 hours between taking the antibiotic and the probiotic. Check this point with your doctor or pharmacist with regard to the particular antibiotic.

The microencapsulation of the bacteria in this product helps them survive passage through the stomach, but it does not protect them from direct exposure to the antibiotic in the intestine, which is exactly why the time interval matters.

The formula contains four strains: Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus salivarius. Such a multi-strain approach is often preferred during periods when the microflora is under strain, since different strains occupy different ecological niches in the intestine.

The product contains no gluten, lactose, soy, eggs or nuts, which is convenient if you follow a restricted diet during illness or recovery. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have chronic diseases or immunodeficiency conditions, you should consult a doctor before taking any probiotics alongside antibiotic therapy.
