Lemon essential oil is a highly concentrated product obtained from the peel of the fruit. Used neat, it can cause irritation, especially on sensitive areas of skin, so it is mixed with a carrier oil (such as almond, jojoba or coconut oil) or added to ready-made cosmetic products — creams, masks and lotions.
According to the directions, for massage use 1–4 drops of essential oil per 10 ml of carrier oil, and for masks, 1–2 drops per tablespoon of carrier oil. Before the first use, it is worth doing a patch test on a small area of skin — apply the diluted mixture to the crook of your elbow and wait 24 hours to make sure there is no reaction.
Photosensitisation deserves a separate mention. Lemon essential oil contains substances that, on contact with the skin, can increase its sensitivity to ultraviolet light. So products with lemon oil are best used in the evening or on areas of the body covered from the sun, or you should avoid going out in the sun straight after application.
If you are pregnant or have a mental health disorder, consult a doctor before use; if you are prone to allergies or have chronic skin conditions, consult a specialist. The oil is not used in case of hypersensitivity to it, and use is stopped if an allergic reaction occurs; the oil is for external use only, and contact with the eyes should be avoided.
