Can 3% hydrogen peroxide be used on the skin around the eyes or on mucous membranes?

3% hydrogen peroxide solution is for external use only, on the surface of the skin. It should not be applied to mucous membranes (the mouth, nose or genitals) or to the eye area: contact with these areas can cause irritation or tissue damage.

Hydrogen peroxide works by releasing active oxygen on contact with organic matter. On normal skin this shows up as the characteristic fizzing and slight whitening; the reaction is superficial and passes quickly. On mucous membranes the same reaction is more intense, because the tissues there are much more sensitive and have a rich blood supply.

If the solution accidentally gets into the eyes or onto a mucous membrane, rinse the area immediately with plenty of clean water and see a doctor if necessary.

When using it on facial skin, especially skin that is sensitive or prone to dryness, check how it reacts after the first application: peroxide can dry the surface slightly, so frequent use on the same spot is best avoided.
