Fennel is traditionally used in various cultures, including for children and breastfeeding mothers, but this does not mean that it suits everyone without exception or in any amount.
Pregnancy: during pregnancy, the use of fennel should be discussed with a specialist in advance. The plant's essential oils can affect the body, and it is difficult to judge on your own whether it is acceptable and in what amount.
Breastfeeding: breastfeeding women often choose fennel tea, but here, too, the advice of a doctor or midwife is important — especially if fennel was not part of the diet before pregnancy.
Children: a child's age, weight and health all matter. Giving herbal teas to children, especially young ones, without consulting a paediatrician is not recommended.
Allergy is a separate issue. Fennel belongs to the umbellifer family (Apiaceae), which also includes carrot, celery, dill, parsley and coriander. If you have a known allergy to any member of this family, consult an allergist before consuming fennel. The drink is not used in case of hypersensitivity to fennel, and if an allergic reaction occurs, stop drinking it and see a doctor.
