Iodine is involved in the functioning of the thyroid gland, which is precisely why taking extra iodine calls for caution in a number of conditions. The manufacturer recommends consulting a doctor before taking it, and particular care is needed in three situations.
Thyroid disease. With hyperthyroidism, autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's disease) or thyroid nodules, extra iodine may be undesirable or contraindicated; the decision is made by an endocrinologist on the basis of test results.
Taking iodine preparations or hormonal medicines. Getting iodine from several sources at once increases the total dose, which needs to be monitored. Thyroid hormone medicines also require the dosage to be agreed taking all supplements into account.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding. The product warnings list pregnancy and breastfeeding as a restriction, so it is not used during these periods; if iodine is needed, the form and dose are chosen by a doctor.
If none of these conditions applies to you, the product is positioned as a supplement for topping up iodine when dietary intake is insufficient, for example if you rarely eat sea fish and seafood or follow a restrictive diet. Even so, it is sensible to first make sure you really need extra iodine, as too much is just as undesirable as too little.
