Although motherwort is a traditional plant component with a long history of use, the supplement does not suit everyone, and in a number of situations taking it without consultation is inadvisable.
- Low blood pressure. Motherwort may lower it further, so people with hypotension should discuss taking it with a doctor in advance.
- Taking sedatives. Combining calming plant components with prescription or over-the-counter sedatives may enhance their effect. This also applies to some antidepressants and sleeping pills.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. The safety of motherwort during these periods has not been sufficiently established, so taking it is not recommended without a specialist's approval.
- Teenagers. If the supplement is being chosen for a child or teenager, the dosage and whether it is appropriate should be agreed with a paediatrician or the relevant specialist doctor.
In addition, if you have any chronic condition or regularly take other medicines or supplements, it is sensible to seek advice before starting a course — even if the product seems simple and familiar.
