Who should not drink sage infusion, or should be careful with it?

First of all, the product is not suitable for anyone with individual sensitivity or an allergy to sage or to plants of the mint family (Lamiaceae, or Labiatae), which also includes mint, lemon balm, thyme and rosemary. If an allergic reaction occurs after taking it, stop and consult a doctor.

The label lists pregnancy and breastfeeding as restrictions, so the infusion is not drunk during these periods: sage essential oils may affect uterine tone, and sage itself has historically been used, among other things, to suppress lactation.

People with epilepsy or seizure disorders should consult a specialist: some components of sage essential oil (in particular thujone) may affect the nervous system in large doses. When drunk as an ordinary infusion in moderate amounts this risk is minimal, but if you have such a condition it is better to check in advance.

If you take medicines on a regular basis — especially medicines that affect blood sugar levels, or sedatives — it is sensible to check compatibility with your doctor or pharmacist before making sage a regular part of your diet.
