The powder is mixed with hot water (at least 80 °C) to a smooth paste — roughly the consistency of thick sour cream. A mixture that is too runny will drip, while one that is too thick will not spread well through the hair. Some people add tea, a herbal decoction or lemon juice to the mixture: this is a common practice, although it affects the shade and intensity of the colour.
Henna is applied to clean, dried hair divided into sections. The mixture is spread from roots to ends, taking care to cover each strand evenly. It is best to protect your hands with gloves, as henna stains the skin.
The time you leave it on affects the intensity of the shade: the longer, the richer the result. According to the instructions, the mixture is left on under a plastic cap for 30–60 minutes; a test strand will help you pin down the timing more precisely. After rinsing, you do not have to use shampoo straight away — henna continues to "settle" for several more hours.
The prepared mixture is not kept: it is used up in a single session. Store any remaining dry powder in a closed pack away from moisture.
