Burdock oil is mainly applied before washing your hair, as a so-called pre-wash oil treatment. This approach lets the oil work on the scalp and lengths, and then the shampoo washes away the excess, so the hair is not left heavy or greasy.
- Amount: for medium-length hair, 1–2 teaspoons are usually enough. Start with less: it is easier to add oil than to wash it out.
- Applying to the scalp: distribute the product with your fingertips along the partings and massage it in lightly; this helps the oil spread evenly over the skin and creates more comfortable conditions at the roots.
- Applying to the lengths: spread the remaining oil over the mid-lengths and ends, the areas that most often need extra nourishment and protection when brushing.
- Leave-on time: the manufacturer recommends 20–30 minutes. If your scalp is sensitive, do not leave the oil on longer than necessary.
- Washing out: apply shampoo to dry or slightly damp hair, lather it and only then add water; this way the shampoo emulsifies the oil better. If necessary, wash your hair twice.
The optimal frequency is 1–2 times a week. Using the oil daily without washing it out thoroughly can lead to build-up on the scalp and a feeling of heaviness.
