A neutral massage oil without a pronounced scent of its own is a convenient base for those who want to add essential oils. Such a base distributes the essential oil composition evenly over the skin and makes its application gentler: pure essential oils, as a rule, should not be applied directly to the skin without dilution.
The standard practice when preparing blends is not to exceed a concentration of essential oil of 1–3% of the total volume of the base (this is roughly 5–15 drops per 30 ml of base oil). The exact proportions depend on the particular essential oil and the area of application: for the face a lower concentration is usually used than for the body.
Before applying a finished blend to a large area of skin, it is recommended to carry out a test on a small area, such as the wrist or the crook of the elbow, and wait several hours. This is especially important if the skin is prone to reactions or if you are using a particular essential oil for the first time.
It is better to store the finished blend in a dark bottle, away from direct sunlight and heat: essential oils are sensitive to light and temperature, and correct storage helps preserve their properties for longer.
