How should pine buds be stored so that they keep their aroma?

Pine buds contain essential oils that evaporate easily if stored incorrectly. To help the raw material keep its characteristic resinous, piney scent for as long as possible, follow a few simple rules.

  • Airtight packaging. Once the pack is opened, transfer the buds to a glass jar or a tightly closing container. Contact with air speeds up the evaporation of essential oils and can lead to foreign odours.
  • A dry place. Moisture is the main enemy of dried plant material: it encourages mould. Store away from the sink, the cooker and other sources of steam.
  • No direct light. Ultraviolet light breaks down aromatic compounds. A dark cupboard or pantry will do.
  • Room temperature. Dried herbs do not need a fridge — temperature changes when the jar is taken out can cause condensation inside.

Under these conditions, the dried buds keep their aroma and quality for the period stated on the pack. If the smell has become faint or an unusual taste has appeared, it is a sign that the raw material should be replaced.
