How should mandarin essential oil be stored?

Essential oils, and citrus oils in particular, quickly lose their scent and properties if stored incorrectly. For BLACKFOREST mandarin oil, the following recommendations apply:

  • A dark place. Direct sunlight speeds up oxidation. It is best to keep the bottle in a cupboard, make-up bag or box — away from the window.
  • A cool temperature. Store the oil at +5 to +25 °C, in a dry place, out of the reach of children. Storing it next to a radiator or in a bathroom where the temperature fluctuates is not advisable.
  • A tightly closed bottle. Close the cap immediately after each use: the volatile substances evaporate quickly and the scent weakens over time.
  • Upright position. This reduces contact between the oil and the cap and lowers the risk of leaks.

Citrus essential oils generally have a shorter shelf life than woody or resinous ones; the expiry date of a particular bottle is stated on the packaging. If the scent has become noticeably weaker or has changed, it is better not to use the oil in cosmetic blends.
