How should I store the jam once the jar has been opened?

Before opening, the jar is kept in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight — the standard conditions for most jams. The exact best-before date is stated on the packaging and depends on the specific batch.

After opening, the jar should go in the fridge. At +2…+6 °C the jam keeps its flavour and aroma much longer than at room temperature. Keeping an open jar somewhere warm is not recommended: sugar slows down the growth of microorganisms but does not stop it, especially with regular exposure to air.

A few simple rules:

  • Use a clean, dry spoon every time — moisture or crumbs getting into the jar speed up spoilage.
  • Close the lid tightly after use: an open jar loses its aroma faster and absorbs other smells from the fridge.
  • If a film appears on the surface or the smell changes, it is better not to use the product, even if the best-before date has not formally passed.

Trust your senses: fresh sea buckthorn jam has a characteristic fruity aroma and an even colour. Any noticeable change is a sign that the product should be thrown away.

Ideally, use an opened jar within 2–4 weeks — this is a general recommendation for jams of this type, although the manufacturer may state a specific shelf life after opening separately on the label.
