How should I use tar soap on the body without overdrying my skin?

Start with a low frequency, for example once or twice a week, and on a limited area if you are unsure how your skin will react. Tar soap is strong and can be drying, especially if your skin is sensitive or already dehydrated. Wet the bar and work up a lather in your hands or on a washcloth. Apply the lather to the skin briefly, then rinse thoroughly and pat dry instead of rubbing. Do not leave the lather on the skin for several minutes; this soap is meant to cleanse and rinse off, not to sit as a mask. After washing, use a plain body lotion or moisturiser if the skin feels tight or dry, which is a practical way to balance the strong cleansing effect. Avoid the eye area, and do not use the soap on broken skin, open cuts, or areas that are already irritated. If you notice marked dryness, redness, or persistent discomfort after use, stop using it and switch to a gentler cleanser. The bar lasts longer if it is stored in a dry place and allowed to drain between uses, rather than sitting in water.
