Heat can soften the vaseline base and accelerate oxidation of the ichthammol, which may alter both efficacy and odour. Always replace the cap firmly after each use to limit air exposure. The printed expiry date refers to the sealed product; once opened, most manufacturers recommend finishing the tube within 12 to 24 months (check the leaflet for the exact period-after-opening symbol). If the ointment develops an unusually rancid smell, separates into oil and solid phases, or changes from its typical dark brown-black hue, discard it even if the date has not passed. Do not refrigerate; cold makes the base too firm to spread evenly. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
