Ground flaxseed contains delicate polyunsaturated fats (including alpha-linolenic acid) that oxidize when exposed to heat, light, and air. After opening, press out excess air, reseal the pouch tightly — or transfer to an airtight container — and store in a cupboard away from the stove or direct sunlight. A refrigerator extends freshness further.

Unopened, the product is shelf-stable until the best-before date printed on the pack. Once opened, aim to finish it within 4–6 weeks for optimal flavor and nutritional value. If it develops a sharp, paint-like or rancid nutty smell, the fats have oxidized — discard it.

The carob and sesame are more stable, but they don't protect the flaxseed oils once the seeds are milled.
