To preserve the fresh herbal aroma and quality of your unfermented Ivan tea, proper storage is key. The main enemies of dried herbs are light, heat, moisture, and strong odours.
First, ensure the inner packaging is tightly sealed after each use. If the original bag is not resealable, transfer the leaves to an airtight container made of dark glass, ceramic, or tin. Store this container in a cool, dark cupboard away from the stove, oven, or direct sunlight. A pantry shelf is ideal. Avoid storing it in the refrigerator or freezer unless your environment is extremely hot and humid, as condensation and fridge odours can compromise the leaves.
When stored correctly in a sealed container away from light and heat, dried herbal teas like this one can maintain good quality for 12 to 18 months. Over a longer period, they won't become unsafe but will gradually lose their vibrant aroma and flavour. You can assess freshness by smell; the leaves should retain a pleasant, dry, grassy-herbal scent. If the aroma becomes flat or musty, it's past its best.
