Because the syrup is sugar-based, the unopened jar keeps well in a cool, dark cupboard, away from direct sunlight and heat. Once you open it, the main rule is: keep it cool and keep it clean. Always take out the product with a clean, dry spoon, close the lid firmly after use, and store the jar in the fridge.
Two practical points:
- In the fridge the syrup may become noticeably thicker and harder to spoon. That is normal — let the jar sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving, or warm the amount you need gently in a small pan or in a cup of hot water. Avoid heating the whole jar, as repeated warming shortens its freshness.
- Keep the kernels covered by the syrup as much as possible. Whole nuts exposed to air on the surface can go stale faster; you can turn the jar gently before use to redistribute the syrup.
As with any natural food, check the appearance and smell if it has been stored for a long time. The product is best consumed within the period stated on the label; over time the aroma fades and the nuts soften.
