There is no single frequency that suits every person, so the first thing to do is check the package leaflet. If you are using the ointment for cosmetic purposes and no other schedule is given, a reasonable starting point is one application per day on the affected patch. This lets you see how your skin copes before increasing frequency. Because salicylic acid can irritate, starting with a smaller amount is safer than applying a thick layer.

Before application, clean the skin gently and pat it dry. Take a small amount and spread it thinly over the rough area only. Avoid surrounding skin that is not affected, especially if it is sensitive. After applying, wash your hands unless the treated area is on your hands and the ointment needs to stay there.

Do not cover the area with airtight dressings unless the product instructions or a doctor specifically advise it. Covering the skin can increase irritation.
