Because the pigments sit on the outside of the hair shaft and don’t chemically bond inside the cortex, they rinse away incrementally with every wash. Most people see noticeable tone for 4–12 shampoos, depending on:
- Hair porosity: Highly porous, bleached hair holds pigment longer but may also stain unevenly.
- Shampoo type: Sulphate-heavy or clarifying shampoos strip the tone fastest. A gentle, sulphate-free shampoo for coloured hair slows fade significantly.
- Water temperature: Hot water opens the cuticle and accelerates loss; cool or lukewarm rinses help seal the surface.
- Wash frequency: Stretching washes (dry shampoo between) directly prolongs the grey.
To refresh between full applications, you can mix a pea-sized amount of the toner into your conditioner for a subtle top-up each wash, or re-apply the pure product every 2–3 weeks on clean, towel-dried hair. The keratin, vitamin E, and linseed oil in the formula help keep the hair feeling soft and shiny as the colour fades, so the grow-out stays manageable rather than turning dull or brittle.
