Jojoba is a liquid plant wax, not a triglyceride oil. This means its molecular structure is closer to the skin's own sebum (surface lipids). In practice, jojoba spreads thinly, absorbs relatively well for an oil, and leaves a light, non-greasy protective film rather than a heavy, occlusive layer. Its composition of wax esters and fatty acids helps reduce moisture loss from the skin, contributing to a feeling of suppleness. Because it's lightweight and non-comedogenic in feel, it's often chosen by those with oil-prone skin who still need hydration, as it's less likely to feel suffocating than some richer oils.
Its oxidation resistance also sets it apart—it stays stable on the shelf and on skin longer than many traditional oils like sweet almond or rosehip, which can turn rancid more quickly. This makes it a practical choice for a multi-use product kept in the bathroom.
