Vegetable-oil-based massage oils are prone to oxidation, which causes rancidity — an off smell, color change, and reduced skin feel. To maximize shelf life after opening: store the bottle in a cool, dark place (a cupboard away from radiators or direct sunlight), keep the cap tightly closed after each use, and avoid introducing water or contaminants by pouring into a clean hand or dispenser rather than dipping fingers directly into the bottle. If the original 1 L container is unwieldy for daily sessions, decant a smaller working amount into a dark glass pump bottle for the treatment room and leave the bulk container sealed. Typical period-after-opening for fragranced vegetable-oil blends is 6–12 months; the pine aroma may fade before the carrier oils turn. Discard if you notice a sharp, crayon-like or old-nut smell, a noticeable darkening, or a sticky/tacky texture that doesn't absorb as it used to. Refrigeration can extend life but may cause cloudiness — this reverses at room temperature and does not harm the oil.
