How do I prepare the basma powder for application?

To prepare the basma, start by placing the 25g of powder in a non-metallic bowl. Gradually add warm (not hot) water while stirring continuously to create a smooth, thick paste with a consistency similar to yogurt or sour cream. A common starting ratio is about one part powder to two parts liquid, but you may need slightly more or less water depending on the desired thickness and your hair's length and density.

For variation, some users mix basma with other liquids instead of plain water. Herbal teas (like chamomile or black tea) can be used for a milder effect, while adding a teaspoon of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar may help the colour adhere slightly better to some hair types. Let the mixed paste sit for 10–15 minutes before applying; this allows the plant pigments to fully release. If the paste becomes too thick while resting, you can thin it with a little more of your chosen liquid. Always do a small strand test first to check the final shade and texture.
