Because the socks are reusable, care directly affects how well they work. Residue from creams, masks and oils can build up in the cotton over time, making the fabric less breathable and less pleasant on the skin. Washing them after each use is the simplest way to avoid that.
Whether you wash by hand or in a machine, use a mild detergent without bleach. If you use a washing machine, a laundry bag helps prevent the socks from stretching or snagging. Choose a gentle cycle and wash them with similar colours. Avoid fabric softener: it coats cotton fibres with a waxy film and can reduce their ability to absorb and let air through, which weakens the point of a cosmetic sock. The same applies to dryer sheets.
Cotton can shrink or lose its shape in high heat, so air-drying is the safer option. Lay the socks flat or hang them somewhere with good airflow, away from direct radiators and strong sun. If you prefer a tumble dryer, use the lowest possible heat only if the care label allows it, but line drying is kinder to the fabric. Before storing, make sure the socks are completely dry; damp cotton in a drawer can develop a stale smell.
A second pair is not required, but because the socks need to be clean and dry between uses, having an extra pair makes it easier to use them several evenings in a row without waiting for washing to dry.
