Does mustard oil have any contraindications or special features worth knowing about?

Since this is an unrefined oil, it retains the natural components of mustard seeds, including substances that can cause individual intolerance. If you are allergic to mustard (one of the major food allergens) or sensitive to any of the ingredients, do not use the oil; if an allergic reaction occurs, stop consuming it and consult a doctor. In addition, the oil may contain traces of walnut oil and sesame oil — this is important if you are allergic to nuts or sesame.

If you have chronic gastrointestinal conditions, and also during pregnancy or breastfeeding, it is advisable to consult a specialist before introducing a new product into your diet.

Storage conditions matter for unrefined oil: keep it in a dark, cool place, tightly closed. Once the bottle has been opened, the oil should preferably be used within 3 months — unrefined oils oxidise faster than refined ones. A sharp or rancid smell is a sign that the oil is no longer fit for consumption.
