The balm is intended for targeted application to areas that are very dry, rough and prone to irritation. It is most often used on the hands, elbows, knees and other areas where an ordinary cream is not effective enough because it absorbs too quickly or the skin dries out intensely.
The product has a rich texture — typical of tar balms based on petroleum jelly, mineral oil and lanolin. This base forms a protective layer on the surface that slows down moisture loss, which makes the balm particularly useful in the cold season, when your hands are often in water or when the air is dry.
It is best to apply the balm to dry skin: wash and dry the area first, then spread a small amount of the product evenly and let it absorb a little. It can be applied several times a day. Because of the dense texture, a thin layer is enough. If you plan to use it on your hands before bed, it is handy to put on cotton gloves: this boosts the softening effect and stops the product from ending up on your bedding.
Since the formula contains salicylic acid and birch tar — active ingredients with a pronounced effect — the balm should not be applied to open wounds, mucous membranes or the skin around the eyes. Nor should it be applied to large areas of the body without first checking how well you tolerate it.
