Liquorice root is most often chosen during the season of colds and when the throat feels dry or scratchy. This is linked to the composition of the plant: saponins, in particular glycyrrhizin, have a coating effect; they help the mucous membranes stay moist and make contact with irritants less pronounced.
The flavonoids also present in the root complement this action. This is why liquorice is traditionally included in herbal blends aimed at the upper airways and the throat.
In addition, liquorice affects the tone of the smooth muscle of the internal organs, which explains its traditional use in regimens concerning:
the intestines, for cramps and discomfort;
the airways, to soothe irritation;
bile secretion, as part of combined herbal courses.
The dried-herb format (rather than capsules or tablets) suits those who prefer the classic way of using herbs, as a decoction or infusion. The concentration should not be changed at will: the infusion is prepared in the proportion stated on the pack, 10 g of root to 200 ml of water.
The product is not a medicine and is not intended to treat or prevent disease. If you have chronic conditions or take medicines regularly, it is worth consulting a specialist before use.
