Inositol is a substance whose chemical structure resembles the B vitamins, although formally it is not one of them. It is naturally present in the body and comes from food (especially legumes, citrus fruit and nuts), but people choose it as a supplement when they want to support certain processes in a targeted way.
The main role of inositol is its involvement in cell-to-cell signalling. It is a component of cell membranes and helps cells “exchange messages”, including in the tissues of the brain and nervous system. That is why it is associated with the function of neurotransmitters — substances on which mood, concentration and the response to stress depend.
Inositol differs from the classic B vitamins in that it is not directly involved in energy metabolism or the production of red blood cells — it has its own, narrower niche: supporting the nervous system and emotional balance. That is why it is often considered as an addition to the basic diet during periods of high mental workload or when it is hard to relax in the evening.
Swanson Inositol 650 mg is a single-ingredient product: it contains only inositol with no other active substances, which is convenient if you already take a B-complex formula and want to add inositol separately.
