The central component is lutein, a carotenoid of plant origin. In the body it accumulates mainly in the retina, where it acts as an antioxidant and a kind of light filter, helping the tissues cope with exposure to bright light and oxidative stress. The body cannot synthesise lutein itself, so it is obtained only from food or supplements.
Vitamin C and vitamin E are antioxidants that help protect cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. Both vitamins have been widely studied and are traditionally included in formulas aimed at supporting eye health.
Rutin is a flavonoid that is often added to products designed to support the blood vessels. It is frequently found in specialised formulas together with vitamin C.
The food base of the kissel is oat flour, sugar and potato starch; bilberry, carrot and beetroot, which are traditionally associated with a diet that is good for the eyesight, together with apple give the drink its mild, familiar taste. This combination of functional components with a natural food base sets the kissel apart from standard capsule supplements.
All of these components work within a food product — it is not a medicinal product and not a treatment for any disease.
