Turmeric root contains several active compounds grouped under the name curcuminoids. Among them, the best known is curcumin — it is the one most often mentioned in scientific publications and the subject of most research.
From a biochemical point of view, curcumin is an antioxidant: it can neutralise free radicals — unstable molecules that form in the body as a result of physical exertion, an unbalanced diet and environmental factors. This is precisely why turmeric is traditionally viewed as part of a balanced lifestyle rather than a remedy for a specific ailment.
In the Ayurvedic tradition, turmeric root has been used for several centuries — above all in the diet and health practices of India and Southeast Asia. Today's interest in curcuminoids largely continues this tradition, supplementing it with modern knowledge.
It is worth bearing in mind that herbal supplements act gently and gradually: the effect of regular use is usually noticeable not immediately, but after sticking to the routine for several weeks together with a sensible diet.
