What is the inulin in chicory, and why is it added to the diet?

Inulin is a soluble dietary fibre naturally present in chicory root. Unlike ordinary carbohydrates, it is not digested in the usual way but serves as a nutrient medium for beneficial gut microflora. For this reason, chicory is often included in the diet by people who want to add more dietary fibre without capsules or complicated regimens — simply in the form of a cup of a drink.

Soluble fibre also affects the drink itself: it makes the taste softer and gives it a richer texture.

An important practical point: if you have sensitive digestion or are just getting acquainted with inulin-rich products, it is sensible to start with a small portion and gradually see how well you tolerate it, rather than drinking several strong cups a day right away. It is worth discussing consumption with a specialist in advance during pregnancy and breastfeeding; the drink is not consumed in case of hypersensitivity to chicory, and if an allergic reaction occurs, stop drinking it and see a doctor. The product is not intended to diagnose, treat or prevent disease.
