What are giloy and tulsi, and why are they combined?

Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia) is a climbing plant that Ayurveda counts among the "rasayanas", herbs traditionally included in the diet during periods of increased strain, a change of season and a general drop in tone. It has been used in Indian herbal medicine for several centuries and today is part of many Ayurvedic formulas.

Tulsi, or holy basil (Ocimum sanctum), is one of the most revered herbs in Indian culture. It is added to drinks and herbal formulas primarily for its characteristic spicy, slightly warming taste and aroma. In the Ayurvedic tradition, tulsi is regarded as an adaptogenic plant and is often used in seasonal herbal teas and juices.

Combining these two plants in one juice is an established Ayurvedic practice: the bitter giloy and the aromatic, spicy tulsi complement each other both in flavour profile and in traditional use. That is why this pair is found in many classic Ayurvedic preparations.
