Ordinary turmeric powder is ground root in which the content of active substances varies with the variety, growing conditions and storage. Standardised extract is made differently: curcuminoids are extracted and concentrated from the raw material and then adjusted to a fixed level. This means each capsule contains a predictable amount of the active substance — unlike a pinch of spice, where the exact curcuminoid dose is unknown.
Curcuminoids are a group of compounds considered the main active components of turmeric, and they are studied mainly for their antioxidant properties: the ability to neutralise free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in cells. Oxidative stress increases with lack of sleep, unbalanced nutrition, intensive training and other loads.
For those who want to include curcumin in their daily diet deliberately, the capsule form is more convenient than the spice, not least because there is no need to cook dishes with turmeric in large quantities, which is hard to keep up with regularly. The supplement does not replace a balanced diet but can complement it as a source of plant extract.
