Both the plaster and a warming ointment use locally irritating ingredients, in particular pepper extract, to stimulate nerve endings and increase blood flow in the area of application. However, the format has a significant effect on convenience and on how long the effect lasts.
The plaster stays fixed on the skin and provides its warming effect gradually, with no need to reapply it. The warmth lasts longer than with a cream or a rub, which partly evaporate or wear off on clothing.
A plaster is more convenient than an ointment in the following situations:
You need a long-lasting effect without reapplying, for example throughout the day or while travelling.
It is important to avoid the smell and marks on clothing that ointments with pungent ingredients often leave.
The target area is clearly defined: the plaster does not spread or transfer to other areas of skin or to your hands.
An ointment or gel may be more convenient if you need to apply the product quickly to an irregularly shaped area, or if you want to be able to adjust the amount of active substance easily.
Neither format is a substitute for medical care for serious injuries or chronic conditions. If you are unsure what is causing the pain, it is worth consulting a specialist.
