How is Lion's Mane mycelium different from the fruiting body, and does it matter when choosing a supplement?

The mushroom Hericium erinaceus can be used in two main forms of raw material: the fruiting body (the visible “cap” of the mushroom) and the mycelium — the vegetative part of the fungus, its underground network, from which the fruiting body develops. Swanson Lion's Mane uses mycelium biomass.

Both options are found in mushroom supplements and contain bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides. The mycelial form makes it possible to produce standardised raw material of consistent quality under industrial conditions, which makes it easier to control the composition from batch to batch.

When choosing between products based on mycelium and on the fruiting body, go by the composition of the specific product and the purpose for which you are taking it. If you already take other mushroom supplements, make sure their compositions do not overlap excessively. People who are sensitive to mushrooms or to new food supplements are advised to start cautiously and, if necessary, consult a specialist.
