Melatonin is a substance that the body produces on its own, mainly during the hours of darkness. Its main role is to set the daily rhythm: it signals to the biological clock that evening has come and it is time to move towards rest. A melatonin supplement reproduces this natural signal rather than forcibly “switching off” the body.
Sleeping pills generally work differently: they act directly on the nervous system, causing inhibition. This is a fundamentally different mechanism, and such products belong to the category of medicines, not food supplements.
The practical differences of melatonin:
It does not force you to fall asleep — it only creates conditions in which it is easier for the body to move into sleep.
It is most relevant in situations where your routine has been disrupted by external factors: flights, night shifts, late bedtimes.
It does not replace treatment of sleep disorders with medical causes.
If sleep problems are persistent and not related to a change in routine or time zone, it is worth seeing a specialist rather than relying on supplements alone.
