Vitamin B12 exists in several forms, which differ in how they are used in metabolism. Hydroxocobalamin is not the final “working” form: once in the body, it is converted into two biologically active forms.
Methylcobalamin — takes part in reactions linked to homocysteine metabolism and the transmission of nerve signals.
Adenosylcobalamin — is involved in processes linked to the formation of red blood cells.
Thus, hydroxocobalamin serves as an intermediate source from which the body itself synthesises the active forms it needs. This distinguishes it from, for example, methylcobalamin, which is already an active form and needs no further conversion.
For most people with normal vitamin absorption this conversion happens without difficulty. If you have metabolic features or chronic conditions that affect the absorption of B-group vitamins, it is worth consulting a specialist before choosing a form of supplement.
