An ordinary moisturising cream usually has a light or medium texture and absorbs quickly — it is handy for everyday care when the skin is generally normal or slightly dry. This balm works differently: its base of petroleum jelly, mineral oil and lanolin forms a dense protective layer on the surface that physically reduces moisture evaporation. This approach is called occlusive, and it is particularly effective where the skin quickly dries out again, even after an ordinary cream has been applied.
In addition to the base, the formula contains active ingredients not usually found in standard creams: birch tar and ichthyol with soothing properties, salicylic acid for gentle exfoliation of rough skin cells, and zinc oxide for a drying and soothing effect. Calendula and sea buckthorn oils and vitamins E and A complement the formula with ingredients that help maintain the skin barrier.
Because of its rich texture and active formula, the balm is better suited to targeted use on problem areas — elbows, knees, rough patches on the hands — than to application all over the body. A light cream and this balm do different jobs and can be used alongside each other: the cream for general care, the balm where more intensive protection is needed.
