Can Vaseline Oil be used as a base or mixed with other oils?

The product description lists “ointment base” as one of its possible uses. Because Vaseline Oil is colourless, odourless and contains no essential oils, perfume or plant extracts, it can be a practical neutral starting point for a simple body oil blend. It is also more stable than many plant oils, meaning it does not oxidise as quickly, which is one reason mineral oil has a long history in skin protection products.

If you mix Vaseline Oil with other ingredients, follow these common-sense rules:

  • Use only substances intended for external skin care.
  • Do not add water unless you are also adding an emulsifier. Simple oil-and-water mixtures separate and are not stable on the skin.
  • Prepare a small test amount first and try it on a small patch of skin.
  • Do not keep the mixture for a long time; ingredients can change after blending.

When you blend, remember what Vaseline Oil can and cannot do. It forms a thin transparent layer that slows water evaporation, so it works as an occlusive emollient. It does not add water or vitamins to the skin. If your mixture is meant for very dry elbows, hands or heels, that barrier effect is probably what you want. If you expect a lotion-like texture with water, that would require a different formulation process.

Keep all blends for external use only and away from the eyes. If your skin reacts with irritation, stop using the mixture.
