Cosmetic birch tar (kasetõrv) from Berezovyi Degot is a traditional dark, resinous liquid obtained by the dry distillation of birch bark. It has been used in Northern and Eastern European folk practice for centuries and is best known today as an external cosmetic ingredient for problem skin and scalp. The 40 ml bottle is a compact format suitable for occasional home use in masks, soaps and rinses.
Birch tar contains a complex mixture of natural compounds — phenols, cresols, guaiacol, betulin derivatives and aromatic resins — which together give it its characteristic smoky scent and dark colour. In topical cosmetic use these substances are valued for their cleansing action on excessively oily skin, their ability to reduce the feeling of itchiness on the scalp, and their long tradition in formulations aimed at flaky, irritated or blemish-prone areas. It is the classic active behind old-style tar soaps and tar shampoos.
People usually reach for birch tar in a few typical situations:
Because the product is highly concentrated, it is almost always diluted before contact with skin or hair — typical proportions are 5–10% in a finished cosmetic formulation. The smell is strong and smoky and may linger on textiles and hair for several hours; this is normal for a genuine, undiluted tar. Store the bottle tightly closed, away from light and heat, to preserve its properties.
A gentle note of caution. Birch tar is a potent natural raw material and is intended for external cosmetic purposes only — not for internal consumption. Do a patch test on the inner forearm 24 hours before wider use, avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes, and do not apply to broken or inflamed skin. It is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, on young children, or together with photosensitising treatments without consulting a qualified specialist. If irritation appears, discontinue use.
